Acting President and Deputy Prime Minister Choi Sang-mok, who also serves as the Minister of Economy and Finance, held the 1st Roundtable on the International Economic Affairs on January 6 at the Government Complex-Seoul. The meeting was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul, Minister of the Office for Government Policy Coordination Bang Ki-sun, First Vice Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Park Sung-taek, and Minister for Trade Cheong In-kyo. During the meeting, they reviewed the readiness of each ministry in response to the new U.S. administration and discussed future strategies.
The Roundtable on the International Economic Affairs, which has been established under the directive of Acting President Choi, aims to swiftly identify and systematically respond to global economic issues, including the inauguration of the new U.S. administration. Chaired by Acting President Choi, the meeting will convene every Monday.
Acting President Choi stated that this year, the domestic and international uncertainties facing the Korean economy are projected to expand significantly while concerns exist both in and out of the country about potential gaps in responding to this severe situation. Under these circumstances, Acting President Choi pledged to focus all efforts on addressing uncertainties and managing the economy as stably as possible, with in mind that the Korean economy will make further progress as the uncertainties are resolved. He also underlined the importance of thoroughly reviewing industry-specific issues that could impact the Korean economy ahead of the inauguration of the new U.S. administration and mobilizing all available resources to engage in communication and negotiations immediately after its launch.
The government will continue in the new year to leverage robust diplomacy and security as a stepping stone to successfully adapt the Korean economy to the new trade environment and restore the people’s livelihoods stability, with ministries and the private sector working as a unified “one team”.
