At the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) held in Baku, Azerbaijan, Korea was elected to serve as a Board member of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for two years (2025 and 2027) and as an alternate member of the Board in 2026. During the process of forming the GCF’s 5th term (2025-2027) Board of Directors in Azerbaijan, Korea secured board membership for two out of the three years. This marks the first time Korea will hold a board membership for two years of a term, as the country mostly served as an alternate member or held a board member role for less than a year.
Korea has expanded its participation in the international community’s efforts to tackle climate change including increased contributions to the fund, the appointment of Koreans to high-ranking positions in the GCF and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), and the approval of the Korea Development Bank’s GCF-related projects.
Building on this expanded board tenure, the Korean government aims to strengthen its support for countries vulnerable to climate change, while working closely with relevant ministries to promote Korean businesses and professionals’ active participation in GCF-related initiatives.
