33RD WORLD COOPERATIVES CONGRESS KICKS OFF IN SEOUL

The 33rd World Cooperatives Congress started its three-day session in Seoul, Korea on December 1, 2021.  The 33rd congress, scheduled to last until December 3, will provide various events under the theme of ‘Deepening our Cooperative Identity’ and will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).  Over 1,200 members and supporters are going to attend the gathering, plus more than 1,000 visitors who will attend online.

In his congratulatory remarks at the opening of the congress, President Moon Jae-in talked about Korean government’s support for cooperatives with financial aid and marketing assistance, saying that Korea will work to promote a social economy, including cooperatives, as it delivers ‘hope’ through win-win and sharing.

Deputy Prime Minister Hong Nam-ki gave a presentation on Korea’s social economy situation, in which he explained the future of the country’s social economy, called PLUS, an abbreviation for People (at the center of economic activities), Local economy (which is to be promoted), Union (which leads to win-win) and Social innovation (which can be led by cooperatives).

The government expects the country’s cooperatives to have more chances to work together with cooperatives in the world following the Seoul congress.
