DPM Attends G20 Joint Finance and Health Ministers’ Meeting
Deputy Prime Minister Choo Kyung-ho virtually attended the 1st G20 Joint Finance and Health Ministers’ Meeting held in a hybrid format in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on June 21. The meeting was joined by G20 finance and health ministers and heads of major international organizations including the WB, WHO, and IMF to discuss the establishment of the Financial Intermediary Fund (FIF) proposed by the WB and a G20-catalyzed global finance and health coordination platform for prevention, preparedness and response (PPR) financing, which was included in G20 Rome leaders’ declaration adopted in 2021.
The following is a summary of DPM Choo’s remarks.
DPM Choo welcomed a plan to immediately establish the FIF at the WB to support the pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response (PPR), and expressed his commitment to finding ways for Korea to contribute to the fund.
DPM Choo made two suggestions about the operation of the FIF as below.
- Seek and consider advice from the WHO to adequately manage the FIF
- Ensure that beneficiary countries can participate in the FIF council meeting, but grant the right to vote primarily to donor countries
