Korea-China-Japan Discuss Cooperation to Counter Regional Economic Challenges
Deputy Prime Minister Choo Kyung-ho attended the 22nd Korea, China, and Japan Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ Meeting held virtually on May 12. At this meeting, the leaders discussed the current global and regional economic situation, policy efforts, and plans for regional financial cooperation. The three countries pledged to further strengthen their cooperation to ensure complete economic recovery, stabilize financial markets and, achieve long-term financial sustainability in the region.
At this meeting, DPM Choo made his remarks on the main topics as below.
- Introduced Korea’s economic policy directions, which focus on improving people’s livelihood, attaining macroeconomic stabilization, and boosting overall economic activities
- Emphasized the stronger need for regional financial cooperation including through the CMIM[1] amid the growing changes surrounding the global economy and commended the positive progress of CMIM
- Requested China and Japan’s interest and support for the progress of the Korea-led Working Group (WG4) for ASEAN+3 future initiatives, such as research on regional regulatory cooperation for Fintech and introduction of Open Banking System as one of the areas for technical assistance (TA)
The next meeting of Korea-China-Japan Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors will be held in Incheon, Korea in 2023.
