8th Meeting Discusses ‘Growth through Innovation’
Deputy Prime Minister Kim Dong Yeon presided over the 8thMinisterial Meeting on the Economy of this year, held on June 8, and discussed ‘growth through innovation’ above all issues. The Ministerial Meeting on the Economy will have a monthly discussion about ‘growth through innovation’ from this month, and the monthly discussion will be called the Ministerial Meeting on ‘Growth through Innovation. The meeting is aimed at finding ways to more effectively support ‘growth through innovation’.
Frameworks for how to support ‘growth through innovation’ is a main topic of discussion, along with ways to increase demand for electric cars and hydrogen fuel cell cars.
The following is a summary of Deputy Prime Minister Kim’s keynote address:
Frameworks for ‘Growth through Innovation’ Support
- Work on regulatory reform: Continue to seek solutions to problems which have caused reforms to stall, such as conflicts of interests among ministries
- Provide priming to help the private sector achieve ‘growth through innovation’: Early implement the startup support budget worth 0.8 trillion won and properly utilize venture funds to encourage those with brilliant ideas and technologies (work to add at least 120,000 new enterprises)
- Provide enterprises, if they are carrying out large-scale projects generating employment, with support specific to the project, such as a deregulation package
- Promote major growth engines, such as future cars, smart farms and smart factories: Build infrastructure, use the public procurement system to increase demand, and efficiently conduct feasibility study[1]
- Work on the restructuring of the job market: Continue to work on increasing labor market flexibility, while drawing up an employment guideline that focuses on job security and involving a strengthened social safety net in the 2019 budget proposal
- Increase qualified workforce: Promote work-study dual programs
- Improving efficiency: Carefully select projects and concentrate support on them
Ways to promote Electric Cars and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars
- Work to grow markets[2]: Maintain subsidies and build electric car charging stations and hydrogen fueling stations[3]
